Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin naturally produced in the skin following exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D3 has long been known to aid in calcium absorption & therefore, bone health, but new research shows that D3 also plays a role in cardiovascular function and supports healthy inflammatory response. Vitamin D has been in the press a lot recently with research being published to show supplementation may be of benefit in preventing conditions like multiple sclerosis, some forms of cancer, diabetes and heart disease & maintaining mental agility in old age. Vitamin D supplements are used to treat the increased prevalence of Rickets in the UK, particularly amongst Asian communities used to higher levels of sunlight. There are 2 main types of Vitamin D, vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), both are converted by the body to it's active form. Vitamin D3 is the preferred form because it is more biologically active.
